Razz Poker – Guide, Strategy & Rules

Razz Poker Feature ImageIt goes without saying that poker is one of the most popular games in the world. Whether in a land-based casino or a virtual one, the demand for it is ever-present and ever-growing. In this article, we are going to talk about a variation of poker that has been all the craze ever since it was introduced.

Razz Poker is also occasionally called the Seven-Card Razz. It came about several decades ago as a new and improved stud game and is usually played with two to eight players. It does not have a flop or use any community cards, which is what makes it similar to the Seven-Card Stud. However, unlike in Stud, Razz makes it a point to achieve the lowest five-card hand possible out of seven cards.

How to Play Razz Poker

Just like any other well-loved poker game, Razz Poker games have several parts to them. It starts with the Ante, where all players lay out their bets. This is followed by the Third Street where each player gets three cards. Among the three cards, there are two hidden hole cards and one face up.

The player who holds the highest card face upstarts first and the round continues clockwise. After the third street comes the fourth street where each player now gets an exposed card. The player with the lowest exposed hand starts the action.

The game then heads on into the fifth street where each player is given an exposed card once again. After the fifth street, all bets and raises are made in big increments. In the following sixth street, another exposed card is dealt out and called.

The first person to take the next step is once again the person with the lowest exposed card. In the seventh street, the final card is dealt and the same sequence follows. The star of the evening is discovered in the showdown when all betting rounds are complete and the last player with the best hand wins the pot.

Razz Poker Strategy

Razz Poker GuideLike any good game of poker, in Razz Poker a great strategy can work wonders. You can get off to a great start by picking your starting hand well. The best cards you could get at this early point would be A-2-3.

Whenever you have the lowest door card and the action is folded to you, take the chance to steal blinds and antes. You can do this with a raise and intimidate your opponents while at it. Keep a close eye on your opponent. If you see them checking their cards a lot despite having a low card exposed, they probably do not have a great hand after all.

Once you hit the fifth street, it would be prudent to fold. Your chances of losing grow higher after the fifth street. Last, but definitely not least, watch the up cards on the table to gauge your potential for winning the pot.
