ELK Studios are the developers behind The Lab, which is easily one of the more bizarre slot machines you will come across. The game features a host of chemical symbols on its reels, as well as a misty, gassy reel structure. The Lab features just 15 paylines upon its 5 reels, with players able to stake anything from 15p per spin up to £60 per spin on this game. The Lab offers up an RTP rate of 96.3%, and wins can reach a rather considerable non-progressive jackpot of 1,000x your total bet.
Aside from the eight basic symbols which appear in this slot (minerals), there are elements symbols (gold, platinum, oxygen and water), as well as the game’s logo which acts as a wild symbol. This symbol can replace all others without exception. That is because the symbol is also a bonus icon, and can be used to trigger a feature in the game.
X symbols can boost your wins by 2x. Rather creatively, the more X symbols you land on the reels, the larger your multiplier will be worth, since the symbols can multiply against one another.
When the Lab logo lands on the centre of the second reel (in the vortex), you will trigger the slot’s singular bonus feature. Two extra symbols will appear on the reels to the left, with others moving off to the right. Lab logos now appear on the centre of the fourth reel and act as wilds for the duration of the bonus, during which players can pocket additional spins with the +1 or +2 symbols if they appear on the first or second reels.
The Lab is considerably more complex than it actually needs to be. That is a bit of a shame, really. The theme was a good idea, but the poorly executed special features mean that players are unlikely to find the game very rewarded. It is nice to have wilds and bonus triggering symbols in one (it means wins are more likely) but the special features themselves need work.
